Moving it “Green” – July, 2009
Transit Air Cargo’s management met in 2008 and discussed how we could make an impact on the environment in an industry that is not known for being “eco-friendly”. Our goal was to be proactive in reducing greenhouse gases through a series of initiates that we would put in place by July 2009.
The EPA shows that in 2008 over 35 billion gallons of diesel fuel is consumed each year by truck and rail transport. This represents 350 metric tons of carbon dioxide being released into our atmosphere. They estimate that by 2012 that will increase to 450 billion gallons of fuel and 450 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This is the second largest source of greenhouse gases next to the electricity generation industry. Changing these trends will take a series of steps by all players in the industry but we feel our initiatives will make an impact.
Here is an overview of the steps we are currently taking towards being “green”.
Our management has put policies in place that outline the “green” expectations we have of ourselves and our shipping agents. They have until 12/1/2009 to be in compliance or risk losing our business. These standards include:
- Corporate directives: Two major policies have been put in place at our corporate office for our “green” initiative. We have implemented new software that improves the consolidation of our freight. This allows our trucks to travel full which combined with slower speeds reduces fuel consumption. It also allows us to keep costs down and pass it on to our clients. The second initiative was to go “paperless”. We used to get boxes of paper each month by the pallet load and had thousands of square feet of storage at our warehouse consumed by these paper products. We have eliminated the need for this by installing new hardware and software and doing business through email and e-fax.
It not only saved thousands of trees but has increased our office efficiency.
- Reducing idling times: Idling trucks consume on average ¾ of a gallon of fuel per hour and produce over 10 tons of carbon Dioxide annually. We ask our drivers eliminate idling while at any dock.
- Alternative Fuels: Bio-fuels derived from food crops are becoming increasingly less expensive and can be non toxic and biodegradable. We ask that Bio-fuels are being used at the rate of at least 25% of the total fuel consumption.
- Driving measures: Drivers are asked to check and maintain correct tire pressure which reduces fuel consumption. We also ask our drivers to slow down from an average of 75 MPH to 65 MPH which reduces fuel consumption by 25% and reduces CO2 at the same ratio. GPS systems in all of the trucks offer more direct routes and minimize left urns which cause additional idling time.
- Informing our account executives and clients: Education is a big part of realizing our goals. Training our account executives to use our regional warehouses not only is "green" but also reduces costs to our clients. They are also trained to discuss the both properties and offer suggestions to reduce the weight and dimensions of the packaging or offering updated booth properties made of lighter weight materials, more efficient cases and flooring products made with recycled materials.
- Planting trees: Each year we plant trees to increase oxygen in the atmosphere and which helps offset the CO2 greenhouse gases.
By placing these initiatives in place and holding ourselves and our agents accountable to these standards we hope to make an impact on the environment and set a standard for other companies to follow. In time, the EPA and other agencies will implement these and other standards. By being proactive we can help reduce the harmful greenhouse gases & save trees and be good keepers of our planet.
